Chapter 25

Crimson nodded to Coral at the gatekeeper’s training. Onyx turned his back on him while Emerald and Sapphire filed in. “Good to see you,” Emerald said. Since he didn’t mention their dinner two nights ago, neither did Crimson.

“What’d I miss?” He stretched to prepare for a physical day.

Emerald shrugged, dropped to the floor, and stretched his legs. “Evasive maneuvers. Aggressive tactics. More of the same.”

Crimson grunted, finished, and stood as Coral and Onyx approached.

“Before we start, there’s something we need to discuss. With the redistribution of the former master dragon’s thunders, you should also receive proportionate shares of their treasuries to support the additional men. I’ll speak to Lightress and make sure that happens today. It was an oversight on our part. Many apologies if the added men stretched your treasuries and abilities to fully bond with the new men.”

“I wondered about that,” Sapphire said. “Good to know I’ll have additional resources to better accommodate everyone. I’ll need to find more housing and move things around until we get settled.”

“How will they split the treasuries?” Emerald asked.

“Depends on the structure the Masters left in place. Most of us leave specific amounts to sons and our thunders.” He glanced at Crimson before continuing. “If nothing’s documented, sons receive half, and the remaining half is split evenly between the thunder.”

“Albino had no sons. I received three of his men. How will that work?” Onyx asked.

Without directions, Albino’s treasury splits evenly among his thunder. The three men’s portions remain theirs even while housed in your treasury for bonding. They retain rights to take it if they leave. If you have a problem with that, discuss it with the High Court. They passed that ruling decades ago.”

“What if they want to keep their treasure with them? Is that a problem?” Emerald asked.

“Not all of us can afford that leniency.” Onyx crossed his arms over his chest while staring at Emerald.

“I’d still like an answer.” Emerald looked at Coral.

Coral nodded. “It’s not a problem. The binding will work when they spend time in your treasuries.”

“Treasuries,” Onyx scoffed.

“Is there a problem?” Emerald faced Onyx.

“Do you realize most masters have less than three treasuries? It’s becoming harder and harder to support our men while you stand here, wanting them to keep their contributions. Soon, only a select few will be able to support thunders. What happens then? Will we need to bow to those holding the most treasuries to survive? Or will they force me to take heads of dragons who go feral because they can’t siphon enough energy from meager treasuries?” he yelled.

“Calm down,” Sapphire said as he stood in front of Onyx. “Your hair’s levitating and shit. Bring all that hostility down. We’re on the same team.”

“No. We’re executioners. When dragons, like my sire, go feral. Gatekeepers take their fucking heads when they could’ve helped by sharing. Fuck if I’m going out like that.” He looked at Coral. “The men in my thunder share our treasuries, period. No lone wolves or shit like that. If that’s a problem, I need to leave.
